The Appeal of Matrimony
A wedding by the water has always appealed to me. Mainly for aesthetic reasons I suppose. The lap of the waves against a jetty or the faint haze in the air, I don’t know precisely what quality it is of the water that attracts me so. There is a good deal of romanticism about it that is one thing. It is also rather sensual, as though hinting of the promise of the nuptial bed. The clean slate provided by water seems to fit with what we would like to say about the marriage we are conducting. The ocean also has something of an eternal quality about it. It seems to echo the lifelong promise that the marrying couples have come together to make to each other. None of these elements quite sum up the effect of a wedding by the water. Neither do they do it justice when considered together. There remains some impossible to describe quality or feature of the water that eludes us.
